Project Gear Box was born out of a simple act of kindness—and a mama’s heart for her community.

Gabby, our founder and executive director, is a wife and proud “boy mama” to five amazing sons, all under the age of 9 when this journey began. As a sports-loving family, they knew firsthand the joy that comes from getting to play—but also the pressure that builds when registration fees pile up, followed by the cost of gear.

Just one year ago, Gabby’s husband was coaching their two oldest boys on a local rec flag football team when he realized that 7 out of the 16 players needed help getting gear for the season. Gabby made a community call for help—and the response was overwhelming. That moment sparked the idea that would become Project Gear Box: a grassroots, home-run nonprofit committed to making sure kids have what they need to play, without the burden of cost.

In our first year alone, we’ve been honored to serve 126 young athletes across Polk County, Oregon—and we’re just getting started. What began in a family home has grown into a community-wide movement, even earning a nomination for Nonprofit of the Year.

At Project Gear Box, we believe no child should sit on the sidelines because of the price of gear. That’s why we provide equipment at no cost, so every athlete can show up ready to play, dream, and thrive.
